762,484. Underground gasification of coal. MINISTER OF FUEL & POWER. Aug. 5, 1954 [Aug. 26, 1953], No. 23630/53. Class 55 (2). In a system for the underground gasification of coal a reaction zone 10 is initiated at the far end of a group of boreholes extending through the seam from a shaft 4, preheated gasification medium being supplied through a borehole 6 and the gasification products withdrawn through boreholes 7 so that the gasification medium is supplied at a high velocity relatively to the withdrawal velocity of the gasification products and the reaction zone is thereby caused to move slowly towards the shaft 4. The coal forming the walls of the boreholes may be subjected to fragmentation to increase the surface area exposed to the action of the gasification medium. In a modification the gasification medium may be supplied through a pipe extending through a single borehole and the gasification products withdrawn through the space between the pipe and the walls of the borehole, the pipe being made of a material capable of withstanding the high temperatures of the gasification products but which disintegrates under the heat of the reaction as the reaction zone advances towards the shaft 4. The pipe may be of steel covered with heat-insulating material.
