940,012. Universal joints. SOC. APPLICAZIONI GOMMA ANTIVIBRANTI S.p.A. July 11, 1962 [Dec. 2, 1961], No. 26619/62. Heading F2U. A universal joint of the type comprising prestressed rubber studs 1, 2, arranged with their axes along the sides of a flat polygon, interconnected by rigid radial members 16, 17 having spider engaging bores 11, has axial projections 22 formed on radially inwardly projecting portions of the radial members engaging a metal plate 28 to retain at least spider-associated set of studs in pre-stressed condition. The metal plates may be axially spaced from the mid-plane of the joint by amounts substantially equal to half or quarter of the joint thickness. In another embodiment, one set of studs is retained by plates at half joint spacing and the other set of studs by plates at quarter joint spacing, the two metal plates being aligned by a ball and socket joint. The invention allows the joint to be held in working conditions during the balancing of one shaft. Specification 886,715 is referred to.
