Abstract
1,162,947. Universal joints. SOC. APPLICAZIONI GOMMA ANTIVIBRANTI S.p.A. and INNOCENTI SOC. GENERALE PER L'INDUSTRIA METALLURGICA E MECCANICA. 9 April, 1968 [14 April, 1967], No. 17012/68. Heading F2U. To prevent surface crimping and resulting fatigue failure of rubber pads or blocks 11 in an elastic universal joint comprising a polygonal ring 10 of the rubber blocks 11 vulcanized between two-part metal plates 12 forming shaft spider connecting holes, the mutually opposed axial flanks of each rubber block 11 are recessed at 14 such that as a result of rubber deformations caused by prestressing the blocks 11 on assembly, torque transmission and/or relative angular movements of the interconnected shafts, each recess 14 tends to disappear and produce in its place a level pad surface whereby creasing of the outer surface of the blocks is prevented. The recesses 14 are of elliptical form, the depth, width and length being specified in percentage terms of the ring width between faces EP and rubber block diameter D.
