Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of general formula <FORM:0938732/IV(a)/1> wherein R1 and R3 represent halogen, R2 an R4 represent hydrogen or halogen, and R5 represents hydrogen, alkyl (1-5 carbon), hydroxymethyl or a carboxyl group esterified by an alkyl (1-4 carbon) group; their acid addition salts; and their preparation by reducing (in examples with H2 or LiAlH4) a nitrile of general formula <FORM:0938732/IV(a)/2> wherein R6 is as R5 except hydroxymethyl (which group may be formed in reducing ester starting materials). Nitriles of the second general formula above are prepared by reacting cyanoacetic acid esters with sodium alkoxides and then with substituted benzyl chloride forming the above esters; hydrolysis with potassium hydroxide yields a -cyano-acids (and by-product malonic acid monoamides) which, decarboxylated by heating, yield above nitriles in which R6 is hydrogen. Alternatively substituted benzyl chlorides are reacted with an a -methylene nitrile in the presence of sodamide. Pharmaceutical preparations comprise an amine of the invention or a physiologically tolerable acid addition salt thereof in admixture or conjunction with a pharmaceutically suitable carrier. Dragees, powders, ointments, pastes, mixtures to be shaken, tinctures, solutions and suspensions are mentioned. The compounds act against bacteria and fungi.
