Abstract
938,251. Heat-treating apparatus. P. C. PEDDINGHAUS, and W. PEDDINGHAUS, [trading as P. F. PEDDINGHAUS [Firm of]]. July 2, 1962 [Sept. 26, 1961], No. 25277/62. Class 72. Apparatus for surface-hardening workpieces by a quenching and tempering operation comprises a heating device 1, such as one or more hardening burners or induction coils, a quenching spray 4 spaced from the heating device and preferably annularly about the workpiece 3 (see Fig. 2, not shown), an after-cooling spray 5 arranged on the side of the spray 4 remote from the heating device and at an adjustable distance a from the spray 4, and means for imparting relative movement between the apparatus and workpiece to move the workpiece successively past the heating device and two sprays. The workpiece may be pre-heated by burners to 300-600 C. Preferably the aftercooling spray is disposed on a movable slide and the distance a is automatically regulated by a temperature radiation measuring instrument, e.g. a pyrometer, which monitors the tempering temperature of the workpiece by aiming a measuring beam at a place in front of the spray 5 so that the distance a is increased when the required tempering temperature is not attained, and reduced when the temperature is exceeding.
