Abstract

1,106,286. Grinding billets. CARBORUNDUM CO. 8 June, 1966 [25 June, 1965], No. 25529/66. Heading B3D. Scale and surface defects are removed from a billet, e.g. of nickel or iron alloy, prior to rolling, by grinding the billet, while it is at a temperature greater than 1100‹ F., by a grinding wheel rotated at a surface speed greater than 12,500 feet/min. The temperature is preferably 1100-2200‹ F., e.g. 1700‹ F.; the surface speed of the wheel is preferably 12,500-16,000 feet/min., e.g. 16,000 feet/min. The wheel is preferably resin bonded. A billet which has been heated in a soaking pit at 2200-2400‹ F. is supported on a table which insulates one side of the billet, the temperature of the billet being controlled by suitable shielding. The grinding wheel traverses over the surface of the billet.
