Abstract

937,995. Electric battery lamps. WORLD-LIGHT MANUFACTORY Ltd. Nov. 20, 1961 [Oct. 25, 1960], No. 36668/60. Class 39 (2). An electric lantern comprises a lamp holder and a battery container, the lid portion of which is connected to the lamp holder and is formed with first means for electrical and mechanical connection to a receptacle to hold four or eight battery cells or a complete battery and with second means for electrical and mechanical connection to a " sealed-in-steel " battery defined as a battery having screw terminals at opposite ends of the top of the battery casing for making both electrical and mechanical connections. In the form shown, two lamps are mounted in holders 11, 12 movably connected to a handle 10 carrying switches 29 for controlling the lamps. The handle 10 is connected by members 16, 17 to a lid 14 in the form of a flat rectangular plate having a turned-down flange 18. A pin 19 on the battery container 15 passes through the flange 18 and a screw 20 passes through the opposite end of the flange and engages the container 15. Two vertical metal strips having inward projections 21 and a central contact 22 on a metal strip 23 are provided at one end of the container, one strip being electrically connected to the strip 23 and the other one to the container. Two horizontal strips 26 having similar contacts are arranged at the opposite end of the container. A contact arm 27 mounted on but insulated from the lid 14 engages the strip 23. The lid has two eyelet openings 24, 35, one being connected to a cable 28 which also connects the arm 27 and which passes to the lamp holders via the switch 29, and the other being connected to the container. The screw terminals of the " sealed-in-steel " battery are secured in the eyelets 34, 35. Four cells in series or two parallel sets of four cells in series may be used or a single battery may be used having spring terminals which engage the contacts 21, 22, an abutment 33 being provided for positioning the battery. The lamps may be mounted on a twin holder supported across the arms of a handle mounted on the lid.
