937,972. Moulding thermosetting materials. GELUSEMA ANSTALT. Jan. 31, 1961 [Feb. 19, 1960], No. 3564/61. Class 87(2). An injection moulding machine for thermosetting plastics materials, which may be mixed with glass or textile fibres, comprises a piston 3 working in a cylinder 1 from which it displaces material through a nozzle 2 into a mould 10, the piston having a smaller outer diameter than that of the bore of the cylinder, and having a collar 5 of flexible material e.g. uncured rubber or a synthetic plastics material, attached to it to provide a seal with the cylinder wall, the collar being of such material that the heat generated by friction between it and the cylinder is less than that which would cause setting of the thermosetting plastics material in the cylinder 1. The machine is preferably operated hydraulically, a series of moulds being mounted on a rotating table (not shown). The cylinder may be fitted with a flexible metal e.g. steel sleeve 12 which can be filled before insertion in the cylinder 1. A plurality of cylinders 1 may be mounted round a rotatable shaft so that each cylinder in turn can be brought into alignment with the piston 3, a piston 16 pressing the cylinder against the nozzle 2 to prevent leakage of material during the forward stroke of the piston 3. After filling of each mould the piston is withdrawn momentarily to sever the material at the nozzle 2 prior to withdrawing the cylinder and piston unit.
