Abstract

870,411. Injection-moulding machines. FOSTER YATES & THOM Ltd. April 1, 1960 [April 17, 1959], No. 13200/59. Class 87(2). An injection-moulding machine comprises sensing means responsive to the pressure of the plastic material fed to the mould and arranged to stop operation of the injection cylinder when the or each cavity is filled under pressure insufficient to cause flash, timing means for restarting operation of the cylinder after a predetermined interval and for a predetermined time and a cushioning device adapted to absorb a portion of the cylinder output. Plastic material is injected through channels 5 in the head 4 of a screw 3 from a cylinder 2 into an injection head 1 comprising blocks 6, 7 which cooperate to form a sprue passage 15. Nozzles 10 in block 7 communicate with nipples 11 leading to cavities in mould 12 to connect them with passage 15 which has a bore 16 at one end closed by a piston 18. The head 19 of piston 18 is engaged by a spindle 24 loaded by spring 27 to an extent adjustable by plug 22 and indicated by sleeve 23. When some moulding material enters bore 16, spindle 24 actuates microswitch 29 and stops screw 3. To avoid sinking of material a further injection at a higher pressure is then performed under the control of a timing device, Fig. 4 (not shown). The spindle 24 moves leftwards after actuating the microswitch so that material is absorbed while the screw 3 is brought to rest.
