UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HALL, OF LIMA, OHIO.
MECHANICAL DEVICE FOR ART DECORATING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 660,952, dated October 30, 1900.
Application filed November 17, 1899- Serial No- 737,299. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lima, in
the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented newand useful Improvements in Mechanical Devices for Art Decorating, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for decorating walls and ceilingsby the application of plastic material thereto; and the objectsof the same are to provide a tool for this purpose Which will be simple in construction, of few parts, and which can be readily filled with plastic material and which will be handy to operate.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view of a device made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the device. Fig. 3 is a front end view of the same.- Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of certain spouts which may be used with my invention.
Like numerals designate like parts wherever they occur in the different views of the drawings.-
The numeral 1 designates a cylindrical casing designed to contain plastic material for decorating walls and ceilings. This casing is closed at one end by a cap 2, held in place by a bayonet-joint consisting of the slot 3 in the rim of the cap, the arch or bridge 4 in said rim, and the stud5 on the casing.
A plunger-rod 6 passes through a central perforation in the cap 2, and secured to the end of said rod, inside the casing, is a cylinder-head 7, consisting of two disks 8 9 and an Lock-nuts 11 are fitted to the rod 2, one on either side of the disks 8 9, to hold the head 7 in place. Formed integrally with the plunger-rod 6 are the two operating-arms 12, said arms passing through loops 13 on the rim of the cap 2 and at their free ends provided with the curved thumb-holds 14. The discharge end of the device is provided witha hinged cover 15, consisting of a dome 16, terminating in a nipple 17 for attachment of a spout 18. The cover 15 is hinged at 19 to the casing and is held closed by a latch 20, pivoted at 21 to the easing and designed to engage a catch or projection 22 on the cover 15. The latch consists of'a wire loop having a curved fingerpiece 23.
As shown in Fig. 4, the spouts may be formed with openings of different contours to suit diiferent'characters of work to be performed, and thesespouts are detachably connected to the nipple 17.
The operation of. my device is as follows: The cylinder-head 7 having been drawn back by the rod 6, the cover 15 is-opened and the casing is filled with the plastic material. The proper spout is now applied to the nipple 17, and the thumbs of the operators hands are caught into the curved thumb-holds 14, and the contents of the casing is forced out by the plunger.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that the casing may be instantly filled, when desired, upon opening the cover and that the device is simple in construction and operation.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention, what I claim is- A'tool for applying plastic material, comprising a cylindrical casing, a plunger fitted in said casing, a plunger-rod connected to the plungerand passing through the end of the casing, a cross-bar rigidly connected to the plunger-rod, said cross-bar having two integral arms bent at right angles thereto, said arms fitted to slide in guides at the sides'of the casing, and the ends of said arms being curved outwardly to form thumb-holds to operate the plunger, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I have subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE HALL. Witnesses:
WILLIAM MURNAUGH, SAMUEL R. VERTNER.
