Description

E. W. 00X. Bag-Fastener.
No. 209,233., Paten'ted Oct 22, 1878.
6% Jwe7v&r.
Mm mm UN TED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDWARD W. COX, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No 209,233, dated October 22, 1878 application filed May 17, 1818.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD W. 00X, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners, of
which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to bag-fasteners for clamping or tying the mouths of bags.
It consists in passing both ends of the bindingstring through a slidin g screw-clamp arranged to receive and retain them, and at the pleasure of the operator be free to slide upon the said string, to admit of the opening and closing of the bag, or be clamped tightly thereto to keep the bag closed. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bag with my device attached theretor Fig. 2 is a perspective View of my fastener, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of the same.
Letters of like character represent corresponding parts in each of the figures.
The ends a a of the string are passed through the clamp A between the pieces I) 0, one on each side of the screw 0. When the clamp is open the string is retained therein by the notches d d. The part c, I prefer to form of an approximately-semi-cylindrical shape, with the lips or flanges c projecting from its sides, as shown, and in these lips are cut the said notches d d. Thepart b is simply a bar of about equal length with the part c, and fitting between the lips or flanges-c. The part c has through its center a screw-threaded hole, and the part I) has a smooth round hole, which coincides with this screw-threaded. hole when the two parts are placed together. 0 indicates a screw, having the shoulder e projecting laterally from its head. The screw 0, being passed through the two parts I) and c, engages with the threaded hole of the part c, and when said screw is turned to the right the travel of the screw draws the shoulder 6 against the part b, so
that the cords passing through the notches d d are clamped between said parts In and c.
The operation of this device may be briefly described as follows: The ends a a, of the string are passed through the notches d d, then tied together, so as to prevent the clamp from falling off when loose upon the string. To close the bag the clamp A is pushed against the bag with one hand, while with the other the string a a is pulled through it until the bag is closed. Then the screw 0 is turned and the clamp A holds the bag securely closed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bag-fastener consisting of the pieces I) 0, arranged one within a cavity of the other, and the outer one having the two notches d d in its edge for receiving the two ends of a string, in combination with the set-screw e,
passing through both said pieces 21 c, for clamp-' ing them together, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I .have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of May, 1878.
