NozzLE FOR HOSE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at JerL Sey City, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Nozzles for Hose, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in nozzles for hose, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this character' whereby the water may be turned. olf at the nozzle, thus saving the person using the hose from running into the house or building to turn off the water each time it is so desired, as in. the case of a person wai'iting a bucketful at a tlll'l; 4
lith these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then speciiically designated by the claims. y
In` order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forining a part of this Specification, in which- Figure l is Side elevation of my improved nozzle. Fig. 2, a longitudinal Section thereof. Fig. 3, an end view thereof. Fig. 4, a side elevation of the parts of the valve, part of it being broken away to show the threaded opening therein. Fig. 5, a slightly niodihed forni of valve Stem, and, Fig. 6, a section at the line XX of Fig. 2 looking in the diroction of the arrow, the valve being removed.
In carrying out my invention as here ernbodied, A represents the casing of the nozzle which is preferably made from a single casting having a central barrel or bore B, this barrel being circular' in cross section as clearly shown in Fig. 6. A portion ol:l this casing is enlarged, as indicated by BQ in which the valve to be hereinafter described is adapted to be situated, and below this enlarged portion, on the inside of the casing A, is formed the bridge (l having the opening D, through which the lower portion of the valve is adapted to slide.
E indicates a lug formed on the outside ol the casing, in proximity to its upper end, in which is formed the hole F for the reception of the bolt.
G represents a guide threaded into the upper end of the casing, having a Slot H formed Specification of Letters Patent.

therein, and upon this is placed the sliding` member l, to which is secured the valve stem J, the upper end of which is curved to form the extension h, on which is out a thread, so that when this extension l is passed. through the sliding member l, a nut may be threaded thereon, holding` it Securely to said sliding member. The lower end of this valve stein is flared, as indicated by li, and has the threaded projection M which passes through the rubber washer N, and is then threaded into the lower member O of the valve, which has a guide stem .P and a flared upper portion Q, the guide l) being adapted to slide up and down within the opening D formed in the briiflge (l.
R represents a spiral spring which passes around the guide P, one end resting` against the :flared portion Q, the other end against the bridge C, thus normally holding` the valve against .its Seat formed by the lower end of the guide G, when it is threaded in the casing A.
S indicates a lever secured to the lug E by the bolt T, on which is threaded the nut U for holding` it in place. Pivoted to this lever is one end of the link V, the other end being pivote d to the sliding' member l, so that when the lever S is pulled downward, it will slide the sliding member l downward which will open the valve, and in order that this may be held open any desired length of time, l provide ahoolr W on the end of the lever S, over which is adapted to pass the linlf; Y which is fastened to the enlarged portion of the casing.
Z represents a perforated. cap, which may be secured to the top of the sliding` member lf, so that as the water passes out of the nozzle, it will do so in the forni olli a spray. .ln Fig. 5 l have shown a Slightly modified. form for attaching the valve to the sliding member, in which a thread J is 'lormed on the upper end of the valve stem J and this threaded into a suitable opening K formed in the screw K2, before said Screw K2 has been threaded. into the sliding member I.
In practice my nozzle is placed upon the end of a hose, where it is to be used, in Such a place as the front of a house, in hot-houses, or for washing vehicles or at different points along a temporary Supply pipe, such as are used-in building operations. To open the nozzle so that water may be had, the lever S is pulled which will cause the sliding member I to slide around the guide (l, which will move the valve stem J in the same direction against the pressure of the spring R, thus opening the valve, allowing the water to iiow out through the outer end, and if it is desired to keep the valve open without holding it with the hands, the link Y may be placed over the hook W on the lever S, which will hold the valve open, and when this link Y is removed, the spring It will press the valve against its seat and shut oil the flow of Water.
Ol course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details oi' construction here shown, as these may be varied within certain limits without departing from the spirit ol my invention.
IfIaving thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and usel'ul is- 1, As a new article o'll manufacture a selll closing nozzle consisting` of a casing, a portion oi' which is enlarged, a bridge having an opening, i'ormed in said casing at the lower end ol' the enlarged portion, a lug having an opening i'ormed therein, `formed on the outer surlace oi' the casing in proximity to its upper end, a guide, having a slot i'ormed therein, threaded in the upper end ol' the casing, a sliding member adapted to slide up and down on the outside ol' the guide, a valve stem so curved as to i'orm an extension the outer end ol which is threaded, said eXtension adapted to pass -through the sliding member, a nut threaded thereon l'or holding the valve stem in place, the lower end o'l' said valve stem being flared, and having a threaded member secured thereto, a Washer passing over said threaded member, a lower valve member having a circular guide portion and a liared portion adapted to be threaded upon the threaded member, thus holding the washer in place, said circular guide portion adapted to slide within the opening formed in the bridge, a spiral spring placed about said guide portion resting against the iiared portion and the bridge for normally holding the washer against the valve seat, a perlorated cap, means l'or detachably securing said cap to the outer end oi' the sliding member, a lever, a bolt l'or securing said lever to the lug formed on the casing, a nut threaded on said bolt for holding it in lace, a link connecting said lever with the sliding member, a hook iormed on the outer end of the lever, and a link secured to the enlarged portion of the casing, adapted to pass over the hook, as shown and described.
2. In a nozzle of the character described, a casing having an enlarged portion, a bridge i'ormed on the inside oi' the casing below the enlarged portion thereof, a guide threaded into said casing, the lower end oi which forms the valve seat, said' guide having a slot eut therein, a sliding member adapted to slide upon the guide, a valve, the stem ol' which is secured to the sliding member, means for normally keeping said valve closed, a lever, means l'or securing said lever to the casing, a link, one end o'l' which is ate tached to the lever, the other end being fastened to the sliding member, and means l'or holding the lever down, thus holding the valve open, substantially, as shown and described.
3. In a nozzle for hose, a casing, a portion of which is enlarged, a bridge having an opening, formed in saidA casing at the lower end 'oi' the enlarged portion, a guide having a slot l'ormed therein threaded in the upper end oil the casing, a sliding member adapted to slide up and down on the outside oi' the guide, a valve stem one end oil which is secured to the sliding member, the opposite end being flared, a lower valve member having a flared portion secured to the flared portion oi the valve stem, a spiral spring adapted to conn tinually press the flared portion against the end ol the guide, and means 'lor holding the flared portion away l'rom the end oil the guide when so desired.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto allixed my signature in the presence oi' two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD NELSON.
