"SILENCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1, 1918.
Application filed April 23, 1914, Serial No. 883,905. Renewed May 25, 1917. Serial No. 170,985.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH E. Bnn'romm, citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Silencers, of which the following is a specification.
"This invention relates to a silencer for faucets or the like, and has for its object to provide a device that entirely removes all noise usually made by water when passing through short nozzles or valves such as in faucets or closed tanks.
The invention consists in the features of construction, arrangement and combination housing has a similar opening at 6; Closing the opening 5 is a closure 7, supporting a stem 8 around which are elongated screw 1 threads 9 forming a spiral of a diameter approximately that of the part 2 of the housing 1. Bearing against shoulders 10, in the housin is a spring 11 acting downwardly upon t e stem 8 to keep the closure 7 normally across the opening 5.
When the device is attached to a faucet or the like, so that water flows into the opening 5, the pressure of the water upon the closure 7, forces it and its spiral device toward the upper end of the housing 1 until the tension of the spring 11 is equal to the pressure of the water upon the spiral device. If the spiral is connected to a high pressure water system, the pressure of the water upon the spiral device will then be great enough to compress'the spring 11 so much that a portion or even all of the spiral will enter the smaller part 3 of the housing. When this takes place, it is necessary for the water to flow a greater number of times around the spiral device because none can pass between the spiral and the walls of the housing, as it can, because of the enlargement 2, when the spiral is not so far open. Flowing more times around the spiral then, more resistance is offered to the water and the flow from the silencer in this Way remains fairly constant under all pressures.
I claim 1. A silencer for faucets or the like, comprising a housing, a spiral member therein comprising a screw having elongated threads, and closure means carried by said screw for one end of said housing.
2. A silencer for faucets or the like comprising a housing, aspiral member therein of screw shape and closure means carried by said spiral member for one end of said housing, substantially as described.
3. A silencer for faucets or the like co1nprising a housing, a spiral member therein comprlsing a screw, closure means carried by saidscrew for one endof said housing and a spring for placing tension upon the screw, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
