CUT-OUT VALVE FOR MUFFLERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 15;, 1907.
Application filed July 17, 1906. Serial No. 326,570.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALLE S. HAMILTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, inthe county of Los Angeles and State of Oalifornla, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cut-Out Valves for Mufflers, of which the following is a specification.
In the operation of motor-cycles it is desirable to have the motor exhaust-directly into the open air; but in cities where it is against the law to operatemotor-cycles without a muflier being appliedto the exhaust I have found it desirable to have a cut-out valve, so as to control the direction of the exhaust. By means of this valve the direction of the exhaust can be instantly controlled.
By opening and closing the valve the excan be utilized as an alarm-signal. When passing along roads in the open country, where the explosions of the engine are not objectionable, it can be widely opened, thereby increasing the efliciency of the engine.
My invention relates to cut-out valves for exhaust-pipes of gasolene or other engines where a muffler is used; and the object thereof is to provide a valve that is economical in in operation, and by means of which the exhaust maybe directed through the muffler when desired. I accomplish this object by means of the device described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is alongitudinal section of the outer end of an engine exhaust-pipe and mufller with my valve in front elevation of the exhaust-pipe and muffier secured thereto with the'valve in an open position, the dotted lines indicating its position when closed.
Referring to the drawings, 5 is the outer end of an engine exhaust-pipe having a plurality of perforations 6 in its outer end. Rigidly secured upon the outer end of the eX haust-pipe is a muffler 7 of any preferred construction. Upon the outer end of the exhaust-pipe and in screw-threaded engagement therewith is a valve-seat 8, to whose outer face 9 is' pivotally secured gate 10. This valve-gate is preferably flat and is pivotally secured and held to the valveseat 9 by a screw 11. Its outer edge is provided with a radial guide-slot 12, through which passes a screw 13, which is secured to the valve-seat 8. Projecting outwardly from the periphery of the valve-gate 10is a lug 14, to which is pivotally connected an operating-rod 15. The valve-gate 10 is held in its open or closed position by means of a coiled spring 16, one end of which is secured to a post 17, rigidly I secured to valve-seat 8, the other end being secured to a post 18, rigidly secured to the valve-gate 10 at a point so that it will hold the gate in its open or closed position.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cut-out valve comprising a valveseat having a centrally-disposed aperture therein adapted to be secured to an engine exhaust-pipe; a gate pivotally secured to and at one side of the opening in said valveseat; retaining means secured to said valve and gate whereby the gate is held in its fullyopen or completely-closed position; and means to control the movement of said gate.
. 2. A cut-out valve, comprising a valveseat having a centrally-disposed aperture therein adapted to be secured to an engine exhaust-pipe; a gate pivotally secured to and at one side of the opening in said valveseat; a coiled spring having its ends secured to said valve and gate whereby the gate is held in its fully-openor completely-closed position; and means to control the movement of said gate.
3. A cut-out valve, comprising a portable I valve-seat having a centrally-disposed aper- I tore therein adapted to be secured to the outer end of an engine exhaust-pipe a valve gate having a radial slot in adapted to enga e a pin on the valve-seat, said valve-gate eing pivotally secured to and at one side of the opening in said valveseat; a coiled spring having its end secured to the valve-seat. and to the valve-gate, whereby the valveate is held in its fullyopen or complete y-closed position; and means to control the movement of the gate. In witness that I claim the foregoing I have'hereunto subscribed my name this 15th day of June, 1906.
its outer edge ALLE s. HAMILTON.
