COMBINED CUT-OUT AND ALARM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 20, 1919.
Application filed April 19, 1918; Serial No. 229,595.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST MOELLMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ludell, in the county of Rawlins and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and.
useful Improvements in Combined Cut-Outs and Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a cut-out and audible signal for motor driven vehicles chiefly of the type driven by internal combustion engines so as to utilize the exhaust as means for sounding the alarm and providing for the quick escape of the exhaust when it is not desiredto have the same pass through the usually provided inufiler.
Oneof the main objectsof the invention isto combine in a single device, a cut-out and an alarm, the parts being so constructed and arranged that a partial movement actuates the cut-out and a continued movement operates the alarm.
sThe invention furthermore provides. a casing adapted to be interposed between the muffler and the engine and provided with independent outlets each having a valve, one of such outlets constituting the cut-out and the other outlet having the signaling device connectedthereto, valves for controlling the outlets and operating means for the valves, whereby the initial movement opens the cut-out and a continued movement opens the valve controlling the passage of the exhaust to the alarm.
fThe drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, however, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a combined cut-out and alarm embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail View of the means for operating the device.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in both views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The device comprises a casing 1 which may be of any construction or design and is provided at opposite points with openings 2 and 3 to make connection with the pipe a which conveys the exhaust from the engine to the mufiier. The casing 1 is also provided with an opening 5 and an opening 6,
.these openings 5 and. 6 being disposed the one in the top and the other in the bottom of the casing. An alarm or signal device 7 is connected with the opening 5 and may be of any type commonly employed in connection with motor vehicles for giving an audible signal. A self closing valve 8 is disposed within thecasing 1 and seats upwardly against the opening 5. The valve 8 is pivotally mounted at one side of the opening 5 as indicated at 9 and is provided vwith a toothed segment 10. Under normal conditions, the Valve 8 is closed, thereby preventing the escape of the exhaust by way of the opening 5.
The opening 6 is closed by means of a butterfly valve 11, the same being disposed to operate in a casing. The butterfly Valve ;11 is secured to a shaft 12 to which the arm 13 is attached, the outer end of the arm 13 having a connection 14: attached thereto, and this connection extends to a manually operable part such as a treadle 15.

As indicated most clearly in Fig. 1, the toothed segments 10 and 16 are of such relative proportions that at one position the teeth of both mesh so that both segments move in unison. The segment 16 is so disposed as to provide for securing, a limited movement without bringing its teeth into engagement with the teeth of the segment 10, and during this initial movement of the segment 16, the valve 11 is opened to provide an escape or cut-out for the exhaust in a manner well understood. However, should it be required to sound the alarm, a continued movement of the segment 16 in the same direction causes the teeth of the segment 16 to mesh with the teeth of the segment 10' so that both segments move together with the result that the valve 8 is swung downward into open position and across the casing 1 in a manner to obstruct the exhaust and direct a portion thereof through the opening 5 to sound the whistle,

The treadle 15 consists of a vertically disposed bar having a tooth 17 and its lower .end is pivotally connected to the short leg I 18 of a U-shaped connection 19 whose long leg is pivoted to a bracket 20 attached to the floor 21 or other convenient part of the motor vehicle. A plate 22 is attached to the floor 21 and an opening is formed in such plate and floor for the treadle 15 to WVhen the treadle 15 is de pressed to a point to cause the tooth 17 to engage under the plate 22, the valve 11 only is opened, thereby bringing the cut-out into operation. l Vhen the'treadle 15 is depressed to its fullest extent, the valve 8 is open thereby permitting a portion of the exhaust to sound the alarm 7. When .the cut-out only is open, the valve 8 is closed, but a continued movement of the treadle causes the toothed segment 16 to intermesh with the toothed segment 10 whereby the latter is operated to open the valve 8. Release of the treadle 15 admits of the valves 8 and 11 and the parts associated therewith returning to normal position.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A combined cut-out and alarm comprisinga casing adapted to be interposed in the exhaust pipe leading from an internal combustion engine and provided with opposed openings, a cut-out valve closing one of'the openings, an alarm valve closing the remaining opening, and toothed segments 7 havin connection with the respective valves whereby the cut-out may be independently operated and whereby a continued movement of the cutout valve in the opening thereof results in an opening ofthe alarm valve.
