Description

0. M. DRISCOLL AUTOMOBILE LOCK Dec. 28, 1937.
Filed March 29, 1935 Attorney Patented Dec. 28, 1937 UNITED STATES" PATENT orrles AUTOMOBILE LOCK Oris M. Driscoll, Trenton, N. 5., assignor of onehalf to Geo. J. Perlrnan Co, Trenton, N. J., a corporation of New Jersey Application March 29, 1935, Serial No. 13,776 4 Claims. (01. 70-242) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in automobile locks and has for its primary object to prevent the unauthorized use or theft of the vehicle by preventing the flow of fuel from the carburetor to the engine. Another very important object of the invention is to provide a lock of the aforementioned character comprising a fuel shut-off valve mounted in the intake manifold of the engine above thecarbureter and adapted to be moved to closed position from the drivers seat of the automobile, said valve having'connected directly thereto a key controlled lock forfautomatically securing said valve in closed position.
, Other objects of the invention are to provide an automobile lock of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construcing drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:--- I Figure l is a side elevational view, showing a lock constructed in accordance with the present invention installed in the intake manifold of an engine. v
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the invention.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a shaft] which is journaled in the lower portion 2 of an engine intake manifold. Fixed on the shaft i V .for controlling the flow of fuel from the carbureter to the engine isa butterfly valve 3.
One end portion of the shaft 1 is reduced and projects from the manifold 2 and has fixed thereon, as by a set screw 6, an arm 5. Pivotally connected to the free end portion of the arm 5 is a foot operated push rod 6 one end of which is located at a point convenient to the operator of the automobile. A spring l is connected to the arm 5 for yieldingly maintaining the valve 3 in open position. Y
Projecting from the intake manifold 2 is an integral boss constituting'a housing 8 for a cylinder lock 9 which is connected directly to one end portion'of the valve shaft l. The reference numeral l designates a key through the medium 0 of which the lock 9 is opened or released.
' 9 and can only be released by the use of the In operation, the valve 3 is yieldingly maintained in open position by the spring 1, as shown to advantage in Figure 1 of the drawing. When it is desired to shut off the flow of fuel from the carbureter to the engine, the operator simply pushes on the rod 6 thereby rotating the valve 3 to closed position against the tension of the spring I. When the valve 3 reaches the closed position it is automatically secured by the lock 10 proper key. When the proper key is inserted in the lock 9 and turned, the valve 3 is returned to open position by the spring 1.
It isbelieved that the many advantages of an automobile lock constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood,
and although a preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details. ofconstruction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What 'is claimed is:-
1. An engine intake manifold lock comprising, in combination, a valve'journaled. in the manifold, means connected to one end of said valve for closing the same, a lock mounted on the manifold and connected to the other end of said valve for releasably securing the same in closed position, and resilient means for returning the valve to open position when said valve is released by the second-named means.
2. An engine intake manifold lock comprising, in combination, a butterfly valve journaled in the manifold, manually operable means connected to one end pf said valve for rotating said valve in one direction, a look mounted on'the manifold and connected to the other end of said valve for releasably securing the same in closed position, and a spring connected to said one end of the valve for rotating said valve in the opposite direction to open position when said valve is released by the lock,
3. An engine intake manifold lock comprising, in: combination, a shaft journaled in the manifold, a valve fixed on said shaft, an operating arm fixed on one end portion of the shaft, means connected tothe arm for manually rotating the valve in one direction to closed position,,a housing integral with the manifold, a cylinder lock mounted in the housing and connected directly to the other end of the shaft for releasably securing the valve in closedposition, and a spring connected to the arm for rotating the valve in the the manifold'and connected to an end of said valve for releasablyv securing the same in closed position, and resilient means for returning the valve to open position when said valve is released 7 by the second-named means.
