J. RICHTER. WATER AND STEAM 000K 03- FAUOET.
Patented Mar. 4, 1884;
UNITED STATES JOSEPH RICHTER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
WATER AND STEAM COCK OR FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,674, dated March 4, 1884.
' Application filed February 15, 1883. (No model.)
T0 to whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosEPH RICHTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water and Steam Cocks or Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in Water and steam cocks or faucets.
The objects of my invention are to provide a valve seat and packing which will wear and preserve a water-joint for an increased length of time.
Another object of my invention is to provide a valve reciprocating on a piston and operated'by a lever, which will be opened and closed quickly, and without the gurgling noise common to this class of faucets.
Another object of my invention is to provide better means for operating the faucetlever and holding it in any desired position, open, closed, or halfopen.
Other features of my invention will be fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is avertical longitudinal section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line was, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is'a cross-section on line 2 2, Fig. 1, showing the bridge attached to the interior above the stem of the valve.
A represents the main and discharging end of an ordinary faucet, A, the guide-section screwing into main section, A; b, an ogee shaped valve-seat, which is raised above the annulus a, as shown in Fig. l; b, an'ogeeshaped rubber valve mounted on piston B, and fitting in the seat b. The ogee form of seat and the boss or raised seat above the plane of the diaphragm keep the seat clear from sediment and allow the rubber valve to wear and the valve .to follow and fill the annulus. By making the valve and seat of ogee form two contact-points are obtained, and a fit of the valve is likely to be maintained as the valve wears in use.
0 represents a post or bracket, on which is pivoted lever D. d represents an arm rigidly connected to lever D, and projecting through a slot in the end of piston B, which projects above the stuffingbox e.
E represents a bar projecting up from the barrel of the faucet. f are notches cut therein. The outer end of arm d engages with notches f and holds the valve open when the lever D is down. The valve may be held closed by bringing the end of arm (2 upon the top of post E. To prevent the gurgling sound when the valve is partially open, I cast in the part A two guides, I, through the centers of which the stem N loosely operates. The radial arms J of the guides break the current and reduce the area of the pipe, and effectually prevent the gurgling mentioned.
0 represents the spring, coiled around rod N, one end being held in place by guide J, and the otherend secured by a nut, m, screwing on rod N.
K represents a valve seated in the lower end of section A. The stem of valve-rod B strikes against nut at when valve 12 is opened, and thereby opening valve K. The secondary valve K is not made a feature of the clauses of claim herein.
I claim 1. In a faucet, the combination of the sections A A, the valve-rod B, the ogee-valve b, seated on the section A, means for operating the said valve-rod and looking it in its adjusted position, the guides I, having the radial arms J, the valve-rod N, loosely passing through the guides, and having the valve K, seated on the section A, and the spring 0, arranged be tween the guides, substantially as described. 7
2. The combination, with the two-part barrel A A, valve-rod B, stop E f, and lever D d, of the auxiliary valve K, its rod N, the guide I, having armsJ, the spring 0, and the nut m, all arranged and operating substan tially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
- JOSEPH RICHTER.
