Description

L. R. QUIGLE Y. LOCK FOR GAS METER GONNEOTIONS.
7 APPLICATION FILED 1111111 17, 1912.
1,067,549. Patented July 15, 1913. v
INVEN TOR le Z6.
FIG.
LEIGH R. QUIGLEY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
LOCK FOR GAS-METER CONNECTIONS.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Linen R. QUIGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Looks for Gas-Meter Connections, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a means for lock ing gas meter connections, such as the cocks or equivalent devices through which the gas is allowed to pass.
It consists in the combination with a cock of an adjustable pin adapted to engage the cock, and a lock whereby the pin may be removed when desired.
It also comprises details of construction which will be more fully explained by ref erence to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a general view showing the application of my lock. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lock. Fig. 3 is a section of the lock on the end of the lock bar, showing the key in position. Fig. L is a similar view showing the key removed. Fig. 5 is an enlarged end view of the lock 7.
A is a chamber of an ordinary cock having pipe connections through it, and the plug B turnable transversely within the chamber of the cock to open or close such connections. The plug has a flattened portion 3, which is perforated as shown; and i is a pin which may be passed through the perforation of the plug. One end of this pin has a head and it is held in place by a clamp 5, which surrounds one end of the cock and projects out so that its outer end stands in line with the hole through the plug. In order to apply this clamp conveniently, it is made in the form of two segments which are pivoted together as at 6, and it may be opened so that it can be passed over the portion to which it is to be secured; the two projecting arms are then brought together, leaving the clamp securely in place. As the plugs are of different lengths, in order to enable the pin to be passed through the hole in the plug, which may be nearer to or farther from the center line of the cock, as shown, the projecting ends of the clamp are slotted radially so that the pin may be moved in or out, as may be desired. That portion of the pin which passes through the plug may be cylindrical, and the portion which passes Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 17, 1912.
Patented July 15,1913. Serial No. 704,097.
through the slots in the clamp may be rectangular so that the pin can not be turned. It will be seen that when the pin has been passed through the clamp and the plug, it will be impossible to turn the plug. In order to lock the pin in place, I have shown a head 7 having a hole bored axially in it to fit the end of the pin which has been passed through the end of the faucet plug. At the inner end of this hole is made an annular enlargement 8, and within this lies I a loose washer 9. This washer has a screw threaded hole made in it which fits upon a corresponding screw 10 at the inner end of the pin.
Normally the head 7 may be turned around without screwing or unscrewing the washer, so that after it has been screwed upon the end of the pin it can not be removed. by any amount of turning. In order to remove it, it is necessary to hold the washer and prevent its revolving while the head 7 may be turned around until the washer is unscrewed; the head can then be removed and the pin taken out so as to allow the plug of the cock to be turned. In order to hold this washer, when necessary, I have shown a key which is formed by a pin 11 adapted to extend through a small hole in the end of the head 7. IVhen this pin is introduced it will pass between the periphery of the washer and the annular groove or channel in which it lies, and will thus prevent the washer from turning around with the head. In this condition, if the head be turned it will immediately turn the washer and allow it to be moved.
The device is very simple, safe and easily manipulated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A gas meter cock connection having a perforated, turnable plug, a two-part hinged clamp secured to one end of the cock having projecting arms arranged in line with the perforation in the plug, a pin adapted to pass through said perforation, means for attaching one end of the pin to the arms of the clamp and a lock fitting the opposite end of the pin.
2. In a lock for gas meter connecting cocks and the plug thereof having a perforation through its outer end, a hinged twopart clamp adapted to be clasped around the body of the cock, said clamp having inc ends which overlap and extend into line In testimony whereof I have hereunto set wlth the plug of the cock, and said ends my hand 1n the presence of two subscrlhlng 1 belng slotted radmlly, a pm havmg a head wltnesses.
upon one end adapted to pass through the slots in the clamp and through the hole in LEIGH QUIGLEY' the plug, a lockable head secured to the op- Witnesses:
posite end of the pin, and means to lock or J OHN H. HERRING,
unlock said head. J. G. BUBB.
