FEED-WATER COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,957, dated May '7, 1889.
Application filed July 25, 1888. Serial No. 281,133. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY D. MEDRIOK, of Port Jervis, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Feed-\Vater Cocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de- 'scription.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section on line 3 y of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section on line so at of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on line .2 .2 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a partial longitudinal section of a modified form.
In carrying out the invention the shell A is preferably made essentially elliptical in general contour, the outer surface whereof may be made square, polygonal, or cylindrical, or semi-cylindrical, if desired.
The extremity a of the shell adapted to approximate the boiler is interiorly threaded to receive any approved form of a couplingsleeve, a, or the said sleeve may he swiveled in the said extremity. The opposite extrem ity, M, of the shell is also interiorly threaded, and in said latter extremity a sleeve, a is screwed, provided at its outer end with an exterior and interior thread, the exterior thread being adapted to receive the coupling 12 of the hose B, leading from the tank, and the interior thread a thimble, B, as best shown in Fig. 1.
At top and bottom of the cock, in the enlarged or central portion, essentially aligning cured, preferably extending above and below the shell, or, as illustrated, the plug-seat may be cast an integral portion of the shell. In that face of the plug-seat facing the inlet extremity a an opening, (1, is produced, and
upon the outer surface of the plug-seat sur rounding said opening a horizontal rib or flange, (Z is formed, as best shown. in Fig. 2. The rib or flange (Z is purposed to retain one end of a strainer, E, in engagement with the surface surrounding the opening (1, the other end of said strainer being projected outward to a contact with the thimble B, whereby the strainer is held rigidly in a horizontal position or parallel with the top and bottom of the shell.
The strainer consists of a hollow cylinder of metal or other suitable material having open ends and a series of perforations, c, in the sides.
In the plug-seat d a hollow preferably tapered key, E, is introduced having an open bottom and a side aperture, 6, adapted, when the plug is properly rotated, to register with the opening (1' in the plug-seat, as best shown in Fig. 2.
The plug may be held in place by a washer, nut, or equivalent device secured upon the lower end and rotated by a wrench, crankarm, or hand-wheel, as in ordinary valves, and, if found desirable, the plug may be provided with an ordinary gland-packing at the upper end.
In Fig. 4 I have illustrated a slight modification in the fittings of the water-cock, which is in many instances preferable to the construction set forth in Figs. 1 and 2.
The sleeve a is dispensed with, and the thimble B is provided with an annular exteriorly-threaded flange, h, integral with the inner end, which flange is adapted to abut with the strainer and screw into the body of the cook, the coupling of the hose being adapted to engage with the body of the thimble. By reason of this construction strainers of various diameters may be employed, and the device is simplified.
I11 operation the water, entering through IOC the strainer at the extremity a of the shell, passes out through the perforations therein around the plug-seat and out through the opposite shell-opening, a, as indicated by arrows in Fig. 1, the plug being so turned that the opening in the plug-seat is closed.
To clean the strainer of the refuse matter, the side aperture in the plug is made toregister with the opening in the plug-casing, as shown in Fig. 2. The water now passing directly through the strainer passes into the plug, carrying the dirt before it, and out through the bottom of said plug.
It will be observed that as the water constantly surrounds the plug-seat the plug is not liable to be frozen up in cold weather.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a shell having a longitudinally-extending strainer-tube at its inlet end, of. a transverse valve-seat in the shell having a side or lateral opening into which the inner end of the strainer leads, and a cock having an open bottom or end and a side opening to register with that of the seat, whereby when the said openings register the water will flow longitudinally through the strainer and out through the cock, and when the cock closes the seat-opening the water will flow laterally through the strainer and thro ugh the shell, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the shell having its sides outwardly bowed near the center and a vertical plng-seat secured in said shell between the curved sides, provided with an inlet opening, of a horizontal perforated strainingtube connected with the inlet of the shell and the inlet of the plug-seat, and a hollow plug provided with an inlet in the side and an exit-opening in the bottom, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with an essentially elliptical shell and a tapering plug-seat extending vertically through the shell from top to bottom and provided with aninlet-aperture, of a tubular perforated strainer attached to the plug-seat around the aperture therein and to the inlet extremity of the shell, and a hollow plug provided with an inlet in the side and an outlet in the bottom, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, with an essentially elliptical shell, a tapering plug-seat extending vertically through the shell from top to bottom, provided with an inlet-aperture in the side, of a tubular perforated strainer attached to the plug-seat around the aperture therein, a hollow plug provided with a side inlet and a bottom outlet, and a thimble it butting with the outer end of the strainer, substantially as shown and described.
