Abstract
937,793. Vehicles supported by gaseous cushions. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO. Ltd. Feb. 21, 1962 [Dec. 9, 1960], No. 42467/60. Class 4. A ground effect machine has a plate which is immersed in water during a turn whereby the water exerts on the plate a force having a centripetal component. The plate 1 is carried by the rod 3 of a piston 7 slidable in cylinder 4 on the machine 2, a pin 9 on rod extension 8 sliding in a slot 10 in casing 11 to rotate the plate through 90 degrees as it moves from recess 6 in machine 2. Load exerted on shaft 3 is taken either by a collar on shaft or by piston 7 bearing against a nange m cylinder 4. Two plates are provided in substantially mirror image relationship when referred to the plane of longitudinal symmetry of the machine, both lying abaft of a transverse plane through the C.G. The direction of lift generated by flow over the plate is outwards and downwards and in a plane containing a longitudinal axis of the craft which passes through the C.G. To turn, for example to the right, a propeller on mounting 13 is moved to turn the machine slightly to the right and the right hand plate is immersed to produce a lateral force to the right to enable the turn to be made more quickly. Drag on the plate produces a torque about the vertical axis of the machine to confer weather cock stability on the machine. The plates may be pivoted to the machine, Fig. 4 (not shown).
