Abstract

924,374. Hydrofoils. M. A. T. TRASENSTER July 4, 1961 [April 4, 1960], No. 11896/60. Class 113. An hydrofoil assembly including a hydrofoil blade mounted for pivoting movement about an axis transverse to the direction of travel of the craft has control means comprising two drag elements arranged to cause a pivoting movement of the blade, the pivoting movement induced by the elements being in opposite directions and the relative drag on the elements so varying with the position of the assembly with respect to the water surface that the resultant pivoting effect is zero when the assembly is in equilibrium and when the assembly is not in equilibrium is such as to restore equilibrium thereof. In one embodiment the hydrofoil blade 1 attached to the shaft 2 has an upper drag element 3 with enlarged portion 4 and a lower drag element 5 with a stabilizing fin 7. A decrease in speed and consequent loss of lift causes element 3 to become further immersed and the drag on element 3 will rise above that on the element 5 to produce a turning movement to increase the angle of attack of the blade 1 and return the assembly to a position of equilibrium. In another embodiment the shaft 2 of the blade 1 has secured thereto a drag element 5, 10, 12 and via pinions 9 and shaft 8 a second drag element 3, 4 of different and tapering shape so that at a certain depth the drag on the two elements will be in balance whereas above this the drag on the element 5, 10, 12 will dominate and below it the drag on the element 3, 4 will dominate,
