Abstract
1,169,266. Hydrofoil sailing boat. A. STEINBERG. 12 May, 1967 [1 June, 1966], No. 22052/67. Headings B7A, B7M and B7V. A hydrofoil 22, extending transversely beneath the hull 11 of a sailing boat having a mast 12, is fitted with a pair of ailerons 25 hingedly connected to the tail side, one on each side of the longitudinal centre line of the boat, and the ailerons are linked by mechanical means and a control mechanism to the shrouds 17, connected at their upper ends 18 to the mast 12, in such a manner that when the transverse wind force on the boat changes one aileron is raised and the other is lowered so that the boat remains transversely balanced. At the beginning of the operation to get the boat riding on its hydrofoil ailerons 25 are horizontally aligned and are pushed downward by the action of springs 41 on shaft 39 in which position the ailerons increase the lift. As the boat picks up speed and rides upon the hydrofoil the force of the wind upon the sail will cause the mast to shift away from the wind. This movement of the top of the mast causes the belt 47 to rotate control drum 35 thus forcing one of the rods 37 downwards and pulling the other one upwards. One aileron is thereby lowered and the other raised a sufficient amount to counterbalance the force of the wind and to stabilize the boat so that it may sail at high speed upon the hydrofoil. Fig. 4 shows a further rear hydrofoil assembly 27 mounted below the stern end of the boat and having a centre support 28 to which the rudder 29 is hingedly connected. Ailerons may be included in this rear assembly.
