Abstract

A sailing vessel has a main central keel 3 and two parallel bilge keels 4 disposed on opposite sides of the main keel. A fixed wing 5 extends between the bilge keels and has individually controlled trim tabs 7 along the trailing edge. In use the port and starboard trim tabs 7 may be angled in opposite senses to counteract heeling of the vessel or they may be angled upwardly in unison, in heavy weather or if the vessel is running before the wind, to raise the bows in the water. <IMAGE>

Description

Control of sailiny vessel by individual tabs.
This invention relates to underwater control of sailing vessels.
Sailing vessels (yachts) are usually fitted with a single keel, either fixed or drop, to balance tlie thrust of the sails and to assist in it sailing off the wind. Sone other yachts are fitted with bilge keels to save height for towing and also to let it sit upright in dried out rivers at low tide. Ihese keel sit at a slight angle to tile hull.
I propose that by combining tile two existing types, i.e. sillyle and bilge keels a new system of underwater control could be formed w-ith the following additiotis.
Make single and bilge keels parallel. Fit fixed wiiigs between each bilge keel and main keel.
At rear of fixed wings fit individually controlled trim tabs. To be controlled either through hollow bilge keels or maiii keel.

Claims (1)

  1. My tlleory is - if vessel is heeling to starboard, The starboard trim tab is angled up ilie port trim tab is angled dowel This will help vessel to straighten up. @n heavy weather, when bows are s@amming into waves both tab angled up to raise bows. If vessel is running before wind, both tabs anyled up will ayain lift bow.
Finally, if wing and tabs are used with planing hull, they should interact and put boat on the "plane."
