Abstract

1497516 Hydrofoil craft BOEING CO 20 Aug 1976 34846/76 Heading B7A A flap actuator for a hydrofoil craft, e.g. an electric or hydraulic servo unit 22, 34 is located in a sealed housing 18 which is filled with an inert fluid, e.g. oil, the pressure of which is maintained in balance with the external dynamic pressure on the housing. The housing forms a part of the fin pod located below the water-line, and a tank 62 containing the fluid 66 connects therewith via a tube 60 manifold 58, 59, for more than one housing, and tube 56. Tube 60 also connects with a cylinder 70 via a tube 68. A check valve 64 is disposed in tube 60, and a free piston 72 floats in cylinder 70. A tube 74 connects one end of the cylinder 70 with the ambient water of the pod. In operation, external water pressure acting on the pod when the craft is moving, acts on one side of the piston 72 to pressurize the fluid in the cylinder and housing 18, to prevent ingress of ambient water to the housing which would cause corrosion.
