Abstract

1,037,338. Stabilizing ships. MUIRHEAD & CO. Ltd. June 15, 1965 [Aug. 13, 1964], No. 32994/64. Heading B7M. In a vessel using a fluid tank type stabilizing device, tanks located one on each side of the vessel are joined by one or more passages in which a submerged propeller-type pump is used to aid the flow of liquid through the passage or passages, and the tank system is pressurized above atmospheric to avoid cavitation at the pump. The tanks 1, 2 are connected by channels 4 and 5 separated by a boundary 7 with an aperture 8 in which the propeller 10 is placed. Channel 4 has access to a central tank 8, in which an hydrostatic head is built up by the propeller 10 in calm water. The channels contain valves 13, 14, 15, 16 actuated by means sensitive to the motion of the vessel. A pump 18 supplies air or an inert gas under pressure to passage 17 and tanks 1 and' 2. A pressure gauge 21 may be adapted to control the gas pump motor 19. Fuel oil may be used as the stabilizing liquid.
