Abstract
1339262 Seals HARLAND & WOLFF Ltd 19 April 1971 [3 April 1970] 16044/70 Heading F2B Apparatus for maintaining a pressure differential in a ship's sterntube comprises a chamber 13 inboard of a series of lip seals 10 which are located adjacent the outer end of the sterntube, a reservoir 16 for feeding oil via lines 17, 18 to the chamber, a pump 22 for pumping oil from the chamber to a position between a pair of the lip seals to establish a pressure differential between the oil in the chamber and the oil in the lip seals, and a pressure differential cell 20 which is connected to the oil feed line 17, 18 from the reservoir to restore the oil pressure in the chamber and the required pressure differential should the pressures in the chamber or lips seals increase above or decrease below the predetermined level. The pump 22 continuously pumps the oil from the chamber 13 to the lip seals 10 via sight flow indicators 41. The pressure differential cell 20 is connected at one side to the oil pressure at the lip seals 10 and at the other side to the oil pressure in the chamber 13 which is controlled by the level of the head of oil at "A" in pipe 25; the cell 20 operates valves 32, 33 such that when the pressure in the chamber increases, the valve 33 is opened to direct oil to a spill tank 27 and when the pressure in the chamber decreases due to leakage of oil past both the lip seals 10 to the sea or lip seals 15 to the bilge, the valve 32 is opened to allow make-up oil to pass from the reservoir 16 into the system. If when the valve 32 is closed, the pump 22 fails and the head level "A" falls to below the sea water level, a pressure differential cell 43 opens a by-pass 17a to restore the head level to "A". An oil cooler 35 and pump 36 may be provided for cooling the oil in the system and a hand pump 39 for draining oil from the inboard side of the lip seals 10.
