Abstract

1440978 Scavenging vessel W H SANDFORD 24 Oct 1974 [25 July 1973 31 Jan 1974] 35359/73 and 04453/74 Heading B7A A scavenging vessel has a settling hold 3 of comparatively large area and capacity with one or more openings 8 to the sea and a vacuum tank 22 of smaller area is mounted above the hold communicating with it. A suction pump 24 is connected to the vacuum tank and pumps 16 plus outlets 9 cause a flow in relation to the hold which enables pollution to rise to the top of the hold and thence to the vacuum tank. A full head of water is maintained in the tank to prevent surging and facilitate separation and recovery of pollution. The suction pump serves to create and hold vacuum in the vacuum tank and to draw off trapped pollution.
