Abstract

1430986 Oil recovery VICKERS Ltd 10 May 1974 [15 May 1973] 23170/73 Heading B7A [Also in Division El] Oil from an underwater leak, e.g. a damaged well head is entrapped by the inverted conical base 4a of a buoyant structure and passes up through duet 12 in a vertical column 2 before being pumped into a tanker or like vessel. The structure is towed to the polluted area with its buoyant superstructure 3 adjacent its base buoyancy chamber 1, as shown in pecked outline in Fig. 1, and in this condition floats at waterline 19. After being centred over the leakage, sea water valves are opened to admit water to ballast tanks in the base chamber 1 so as to sink the column 2 and bring the superstructure 3 to the head of the column, additional ballast also being introduced into a tank 14 at the base of the column. The superstructure 3 is connected to the column head 9 by way of an annular collar 18 and then the tank 14 is emptied to raise the superstructure above a new waterline 21. Sea water is extracted by a pump (not shown) from the upper end of the duct 12 so that oil replaces it by passing upwards from the base 4a. When all the sea water has been expelled pumping is interrupted to connect up hoses to a tanker or the like moored alongside and then restarted to load the tanker. Recovered oil may also be stored in the tanks of ballast chamber 1. The central duct section has an upward extension 22 at the column head 9 which extension terminates at 24 well clear of the superstructure 3 for venting unwanted gases. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,106,258.
