Abstract

Apparatus for the supply and discharge of ballast to or from tankers, more especially oil tankers, designed to prevent oil pollution of the sea near coasts or harbours, comprising at least one overflow tank in the ship's hull, a pipeline with a shut-off valve, opening near the bottom of the overflow tank and connecting this to the sea outside the ship for the supply and discharge of sea water, feed and discharge pipelines for connecting the overflow tank with the holds (i.e. oil tanks), a pump for the supply and discharge of sea water to the holds and v.v. and valves for changing over the pumps for the supply or discharge. Ensures that pumping oil of ballast from the oil tanks cannot cause oil pollution, since the arrangement as described retains the oil in the overflow tank (ballast chamber).
