Abstract
1330908 Stabilizing hydrofoil craft CANTIERE NAVALTECNICA SpA and V GUIDI 5 Oct 1970 [4 Oct 1969 31 Oct 1969] 47330/70 Heading B7A A hydrofoil stabilization system senses the movement of water transversely of a hydrofoil strut and adjusts the hydrodynamic trim of the strut to reduce to zero the horizontal component perpendicular to the chord of the strut of the water pressure acting on the strut. As illustrated, a hollow strut 2 is pivotable about a vertical axis I-I. The strut bends in response to forces F generated by transverse relative water movement so that a blade 12 acts through a servo-system to operate an hydraulic actuator 10. The actuator rotates the strut 2 into its minimum resistance position relative to the water. In a modification, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), the strut is fixed and the hydrodynamic trim of the strut is adjusted by operation of a trailing edge pivoted flap. In another modification (not shown), the strut is again fixed and its trim is adjusted by the action of air or water jets which deflect the boundary layer formed by the water around the strut to simulate the action of a pivoted flap. The stabilization system may be used alone or in combination with a system of flaps pivoted to the trailing edges of the hydrofoils themselves.
