Abstract
A cellulosic fibrous material is treated at a pH value of less than 4 with a cold aqueous solution of either one or both of ferric sulphate and aluminium sulphate or with a cold aqueous solution of a double sulphate of ferric sulphate or aluminium sulphate with an alkali metal or ammonia. Cellulosic fibrous material is defined as natural cellulose fibres, substantially free from the common impurities such as vegetable oils, in the form of filaments, threads, gauze or cloth, and absorbent cotton wool is the preferred form thereof. Treatment may be carried out at 15 DEG -25 DEG C., for a period of at least 20 hours, using an aqueous solution containing 1 gram of solute in 100 mls. solution, and the product, which is useful as a styptic composition, finally dried and ground to produce a powder.ALSO:A styptic composition is made by treating a cellulosic fibrous material at a pH value of less than 4 with a cold aqueous solution of either one or both of ferric sulphate and aluminium sulphate or with a cold aqueous solution of a double sulphate of ferric sulphate or aluminium sulphate with an alkali metal or ammonia. Cellulosic fibrous material is defined as natural cellulose fibres, substantially free from the common impurities such as vegetable oils, in the form of filaments, threads, gauze or cloth, and absorbent cotton wool is the preferred form thereof. Treatment may be carried out at 15-25 DEG C., for a period of at least 20 hours, using an aqueous solution containing 1 gram of solute in 100 mls. solution and the product finally dried and ground to produce a powder.
