Abstract

A porous, spongy product obtained by distributing a gas through a disintegrated swollen fibrous animal material, shrinking and drying may be made radio-active by impregnation with radio-active material.ALSO:A resorbable porous spongy product suitable for use in tampons, bandages and the like for medical purposes is obtained from animal material comprising elastin or collagenous fibres by swelling the material and separating it into fibres in known manner, a suspension of fibres in the swelling liquid being produced, distributing a gas, e.g. air, through the swollen material, subjecting the material to the action of a shrinking agent and removing liquid. The dried material may be sterilized by treatment with hot air or chemicals, may be rendered radioactive or may be impregnated with curative agents, styptics or antiseptics, e.g. iodine.
