Description
In recent years the high therapeutic properties of natural silk, especially its main substance, fibroin, have become known in the cultivated countries. Cobwebs have always been rightly considered to have a healing effect on open wounds. Ancient Africans are familiar with the caterpillar webs (Anaphe), which work wonders as a wound dressing for the worst wounds, especially burns.
Our dressing materials today are cotton fabrics, which are supposed to protect wounds against external influences. But they themselves have no healing effect that can only be achieved in conjunction with ointments, powders, etc.
The invention now proposes using the high medicinal properties of natural silk, in the form of a fabric, for the direct treatment of wounds of all types. In order to increase the healing effect of the tissue, it is subjected to a special treatment, the same aiming at the loosening of the fibroin molecules by partial hydrolysis, for example as follows:
The tissue is treated with a normal solution of sodium hydroxide solution at temperatures between 50 and 80 for approx. 10 minutes, then neutralized with acid (e.g. hydrochloric or sulfuric acid), exposed to a water bath again and finally dried in hot air and sterilized at the same time. The treatment can also be done cold for a longer period of time. In general, any other partial hydrolysis can be used, but care must be taken that the strength of the tissue is not influenced too much.
