Abstract

936,172. Nickel plating baths. UDYLITE RESEARCH CORPORATION. July 21, 1961 [July 26, 1960 (3)], No. 26619/61. Class 41. A lustrous coating of nickel is formed on a metal surface using an acid electro-plating bath containing a nickel salt, a brightening agent, and a suspension of a finely powdered insoluble inorganic compound, the grain size of which is less than 5 Á, and preferably 0.02 to 0.5 Á, e.g. oxides, phosphates, oxalates, silicates or fluorides of alkaline earth metals, aluminium, iron, zirconium, cerium, nickel and chromium; silica, carbides of silicon, boron, and titanium; zinc or cadmium sulphide; and iron silicide. The suspension is maintained by mechanical or air agitation, or by ultra-sonic vibration, and by adding dispersing agents. In examples, a nickel plating bath containing nickel sulphate, chloride, sulphanate, or fluoborate, is agitated while adding 10 g. to 500 g. per litre of mica, kaolin, talc, finely powdered glass; barium or strontium sulphate, carbonate, or oxalate; zirconium aluminium or titanium oxide, all of 0.03 to 0.3 Á particle size. The brightening agents added may be aryl sulphonamides, or sulphonic acids, N-allyl quinaldinium bromide, coumarin, butyne diol and other compounds. Plating temperatures of 60‹ to 82‹ C. are applied at pH 2.8 to 5.2. After coating, the surface which may be Fe, Al, Mg, Cu, Zn or brass, is freed from loosely adherent particles by treating with HCl or by applying a flash coating of zinc. Final plates of Cr, Sn, Ag, Rh, Cu, Au or Sn-Ni alloy can be given or a coating of clear lacquer. Specifications 743,726 and 836,802 are also referred to.
