Abstract
444,464. Electroplating. SCHERING- KAHLBAUM AKT.-GES., 170, Mullerstrasse, Berlin. Oct. 28, 1935, No. 29761. Convention date, Oct. 26, 1934. [Class 41] Plating baths which have been in use for some time are treated with materials of high surface activity such as fuller's earth, silica gel or activated charcoal. Pitting in the deposit is thereby prevented. The materials known by the Registered Trade Marks "Frankonit" and "Carboraffin" may be employed. The materials may be added as a powder, paste or suspension, from which adsorbed gases have been removed. If the materials are such as migrate under the influence of an electric current, they should be removed before plating ; otherwise they may remain in the bath. Alternatively, the electrolyte may be passed through a filtering layer of the material. The materials may be employed in conjunction with further additions such as metal hydroxides, carbonates or silicates and oxidizing agents such as persulphates or percarbonates. Detailed examples for the treatment of nickel and copper baths are given.
