Abstract

860,291. Coating articles by electro-deposition ; electro-forming. PLATECRAFT OF AMERICA Inc. May 7, 1958 [July 19, 1957], No. 14589/58. Class 41. Articles are coated by electro-deposition by immersing the article as a cathode in an electroplating bath containing a suspension of particles insoluble in the bath and electrically inert, whereby metal is electro-deposited on the article and simultaneously the particles settle on the surface and are embedded in the metal coating and are bonded to it. The metal deposited may be Cr, Cu, Ni, Cd and the article may be pre-coated with one of these. The inert particles are abradant resistant materials, e.g. tungsten or silicon carbide, oxides of iron or alumina, metal carbonates, diamonds or powdered metal preferably in a very fine state of division, e.g. 600 to 1000 U.S.S. sieve. The coating obtained may contain up to 90% of the abradant resistant material. Preferably, the electrolyte and suspended material is circulated by a pump over the article during plating, and the article is also rotated., The process may be used to provide a heat and abrasion resistant surface, e.g, on airplane, locket motor or I.C. engine parts, and to the manufacture of electroformed articles using a mould, e.g. thread gauges, and dies. A suitable coating is 0.0007 inch thick containing 50/50 of nickel and silicon carbide. A final coating of metal only may then be applied. The master mould may be of aluminium, and is removed by dissolving in alkali or acid. Specification 860,290 is referred to.
