Abstract
1323656 Coated cathode INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd 14 March 1972 [17 March 1971] 11836/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division C7] A cathode, for the electrode position of metal thereon and subsequent removal of the deposited metal therefrom, consists of sheet metal presenting on one or both faces a resist pattern formed by a film of epoxy base paint cured by dicyandiamide, the film being separated from the sheet by a Cr plate. For use of the cathode in electrorefining metal (e.g. Ni), the resist pattern may comprise interconnecting areas or lines bounding discrete areas whereby the electrodeposited refined metal can be subsequently removed from the cathode as pieces. For use in electroforming foraminous products (e.g. Ni screens), the resist pattern is discontinuous, e.g. a system of dots, and the sheet metal cathode may be in the form of a rotating cylinder. The sheet metal of the cathode may be stainless steel, Ti, Al, Fe or Ni. The Cr plate may have been electroplated from a bath containing chromic acid and H 2 SO 4 . The epoxy resin used in the paint may be a mixture of glycidyl ethers of bis-phenol and may contain TiO 2 , CaCO 3 and SiO 2 . The parts of the Cr unmasked by the paint may have been removed by anodic dissolution in an aqueous solution of NaOH. When using the cathode in electrorefining Ni, the tendancy of the Ni to lift off the cathode during deposition may be reduced by depositing 0.005 to 0.025%S therewith from an electrolyte incorporating SO 2 . When depositing sulphur-free Ni, the cathode may first be roughened by grit blasting. Other specified metals which may be deposited are Co, Fe and Ni-Co.
