Abstract
1,265,472. Bearing materials. BRISTOL AEROJET Ltd. 28 Feb., 1969 [29 Nov., 1967], No. 54378/67. Heading F2A. [Also in Division C7] A bearing element has a bearing surface afforded by electrodeposited composite material comprising an electrolytically deposited metal matrix containing co-deposited particles of partially or wholly graphitized carbon in the form of fibres or whiskers having a length not greater than 1 cm. The material is deposited by electroplating the metal, e.g. Ni, Co or Sn-Pb, in a plating bath containing the particles in suspension. The deposited fibres may be directionally random or may be oriented relative to one another. The material may be deposited on a cathode which is thereafter removed from the deposited material or may be deposited on a base which is to form part of the final bearing element. In the examples, graphite whiskers 7 to 8 mms. long are codeposited with (I) Ni from a bath comprising nickel sulphamate, nickel chloride and boric acid using an Ni anode, (II) Co from a bath comprising cobalt sulphate, sodium chloride and boric acid using a Co anode. In both examples, the anode is bagged in Terylene (Registered Trade Mark). The deposition is in apparatus as described in Specification 1,218,179 wherein the electrolyte is agitated by bubbling air through it. Prior to coating, a metal substrate is degreased, areas not to be coated are masked and the remaining areas cleaned mechanically or chemically. The Specification contains a reference to Specification 1,224,166 followed by disclaimers.
