Abstract
1409669 Nickel plating SOC ANON AUTOMOBILES CITROEN 7 Nov 1972 [9 Nov 1971] 51242/72 Heading C7B A wear-resistant coating of Ni containing a dispersed phase of hard fine (less than 400 m) particles e.g. of SiC is formed on a light (e.g. Al-Si) alloy element wall exposed to frictional forces, e.g. the trochoidal inner wall of a rotary piston engine casing, by subjecting the wall to shotblasting, then preferably an attack in a bath of a Na compound, e.g. containing 50 to 150 g/l NaOH and 5 to 15 g/l of a polyhydroxy (e.g. gluconic) acid or salt thereof (e.g. Na gluconate), optionally followed by an attack in a concentrated bath of HNO 3 -HF, prior to first chemically depositing thereon a thin (less than 2Á) layer of Zn, e.g. in an alkali bath then electro-depositing a composite layer of Ni containing dispersed hard fine, particles e.g. of SiC. Prior to electro-depositing the composite layer, the Zn coated wall may be prenickeled by electro-depositing Ni without particles, Ni plating baths may contain Ni sulphomate and chloride, boric acid, saccharin or Na saccharinate and wetting agent. Alternatively, prior to electrodepositing Ni, the wall may be subjected to two successive Zn treatments, the Zn layer deposited in the first being dissolved in concentrated HNO 3 before the second,
