Abstract

1311854 Plating granules; coating with metals UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 17 July 1970 [17 July 1969] 36175/69 Headings C7B and C7F [Also in Division F2] A bearing surface is produced by forming a layer of hard granules e. g. on a conductive substrate, plating a metal into the interstices between the granules to cover the layer and form a composite metal-granule structure, and removing material from the covered-over face of the layer, e. g. by machining and honing using diamond cutting tools, to leave a smooth bearing surface comprising areas of the metal and granules. The substrate may be a cylindical steel shell, degreased in C 2 HCl 3 vapour then anodically cleaned in aqueous NaOH-Na 2 CO 3 at a C.D. of 50 ASF and etched in the H 2 SO 4 at a C.D. of 200 ASF with water rinses. The granules may be diamonds, refractory hard i.e, transition metal carbides, nitrides, borides or silicides, hard alumina or Al 2 O 3 -Cr 2 O 3 solid solution, sensitized with SnCl 2 , then PdCl 2 solutions, and coated with Ni (or other ferromagnetic metal) from an aqueous NiCl 2 - NaH 2 PO 2 solutions, so that the granules are held to the magnetized substrate during plating, e.g. with Ni or other transition metal, Al, Sn, Pb or In, by electro-, electroless or vapour plating. For example, Ni may be electro-deposited on to the bore of the steel shell from an aqueous bath containing 340 g/l Ni (NH 2 SO 3 ) 2 , 3À3 g/l NiCl 2 , 30 g/l H 3 BO 3 , 7À5 g/l naphthalene tri-sulphonate and Na lauryl sulphate a pH of 3À5-4À3, using a C.
