Abstract

1391001 Electro-depositing metal and diamonds ERNST WINTER & SOHN 22 May 1972 [23 June 1971] 23998/72 Heading C7B A composite plate of metal, e.g. Cd, Sb, Bi, Cr, Co, Cu, Au, In, Fe, Pb, Ni, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ag, W, Sn or Zn, and fine diamond particles À01 to 30 microns average diameter is electro-deposited on a conductive (e.g. metal) element from a suspension of the diamonds in a metal plating bath, to provide a wear-resisting surface, e.g. for tools, knives, saws, shears, blades, drills, bearing, taps and punches. Baths specified include: (1) NiSO 4 + NiCl 2 + H 3 BO 3 ; (2) Sb 2 S 3 + Na 2 CO 3 (3) BiO + HClO 4 ; (4) CrO 3 + H 2 SO 4 ; (5) CoSO 4 + NaCl + H 3 BO 3 ; (6) CuSO 4 +H 2 SO 4 ; (7) KAu(CN) 2 + KCN + Na 2 HPO 4 ; (8) FeSO 4 + FeCl 2 + NH 4 Cl; (9) Pb(OH) 2 .PbCO 3 + HF + H 3 BO 3 ; (10 & 11) Pd or Pt diamino nitrite + NH 4 NO 2 + NaNO 3 + NH 4 OH; (12) SnCl 2 + NiCl 2 + NH 4 HF 2 + NH 4 OH; (13) AgCN + KCN + K 2 CO 3 ; (14) NaCN + CdO; (15) Na 2 WO 4 + NaOH, + dextrose; (17) Zn(CN)2 + NaCN + NaOH. The baths may include beveling and brightening agents: e.g. o- or p-toluene sulphonamide, o-benzoyl sulphamide or sulphimide, napthalene, mono-, di- or tri-sulphonic acid, sulphonated aryl aldehyde, CdSO 4 . Glue and cresol may be added to a Bi bath; glue, casein, molasses and goulac to a Cd bath; CS 2 to a Ag bath; and glucose and Na acetate to a Sn bath (e.g. furnished by Na 2 SnO 3 ). NH 4 Cl or (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 may be present in a Ni bath. Prior to suspension in the plating bath, the diamonds may be cleaned in HCl, then NaOH, soaked in coumarin sulphate and H 2 SO 4 solution, then in an anionic wetting agent. A magnet may be attached to the cathode to increase the density (and rate of deposition) of the particles. The diamond containing plate can be given a final Cr plate.
