Abstract
1310324 Coating abrasive particles; electrolytic coatings DE BEERS INDUSTRIAL DIAMOND DIVISION Ltd 21 May 1971 [22 May 1970] 16293/71 Headings C7B and C7F [Also in Division C4] An abrasive particle has a composite coating comprising a first layer of Ni or a Ni alloy and a second layer of Cu, the one layer being on the other layer and the metal of each layer being 20-80 wt per cent of the abrasive particle. Preferably the composition coating is 50-150 wt per cent of the particle. Abrasives mentioned are diamond, cubic boron nitride, silicon carbide and tungsten carbide; a flash-coating of high Cucontent bronze may be provided on the coated particle, constituting 2 wt per cent thereof. Metals are applied electrolessly or electrolytically; specifically, Ni may be deposited electrolytically from a Ni-sulphamate bath. Specific examples are (1) abrasive coated with Ni coated with Cu and (2) abrasive coated with Ni-Fe (preferably containing 36-43% Ni) coated with Cu, the coatings being respectively 50-80% and 20-50% of the particle.
