Abstract

1310686 Brazing; grinding; trueing PERMATTACH DIAMOND TOOL CORP 19 Feb 1970 [4 March 1969] 8019/70 Headings B3D and B3R [Also in Divisions C4 and C9] A diamond is coated with Zr or Ti or a mixture thereof by coating, e.g. in a tumbler, with powdered Zr or Ti containing at least 10% of the metal hydride, and then heating the coated diamond in a vacuum at 350‹ to 1250‹ C. A layer of Ni, Cu, Fe, Zn, Sn, Ag, Au, Cd or Co may then be applied by electroless or electrolytic plating, sputtering or vacuum deposition. Ceramic, glass or aluminium oxide filaments may be incorporated in the plating solution. Alternatively a layer of resin or ceramic may be applied by vitrifying or hot pressing. The coated diamonds may be mixed with Cu powder and hot pressed in a graphite mould and sintered or infiltrated with brazing material. Alternatively Cu or Ni coated diamonds may be sintered in situ. The coated diamonds may be coated with brazing material, mixed with sponge iron and heated in hydrogen or a vacuum. The resultant coated diamonds may be embedded in a resin matrix. Ti coated diamonds overcoated with Cu or Ni or both may be hot pressed into a cavity in a steel shank of a wheel dressing tool (Fig. 6, not shown) and hot pressed with Cu and Ag brazing alloy powders. The coated diamonds may also be mounted on a tool by applying brazing materials between the diamonds and the tool and heating with a gas torch in air. Brazing materials may be Cu-Ag, Cu-Be or Cu-Zn. Other tools produced may comprise grinding wheels or segments, saw blades or honing tools.
