Abstract

A sintered diamond tool, e.g. a dressing tool, incorporating diamonds in a ferrous matrix is made by compacting a powder mixture comprising diamond, a hard carbide and a major proportion of ferrous metal and then impregnating the compact with a copper impregnant. The powder mixture comprises by weight 20- 70% Fe, 0-30% Co, 10-50% WC, 5-20% diamonds. The Fe powder can be mixed or alloyed with 1-4% Cu, 0À1-2% C, 1-5% Ni, 0À2-13% Cr and 0À1-4%Mo. The impregnated compact contains 5-30% by weight Cu, and the Cu impregnant may be a Cu alloy containing up 10% Sn, up to to 10% Zn and up to 15% Ag.
