Abstract
A grinding tool comprises diamond particles dispersed in a sintered tungsten carbide cobalt matrix which has an interconnected open volume of 20-50% which pores are filled with a metallic material such as silver solder or a brazing alloy which has a lower melting point than the matrix. The matrix contains at least 10% by weight of tungsten carbide of 0.5-2m size and the diamond is present in 25% by volume of 120 mesh size. Secondary abrasives such as tungsten carbide, titanium carbide, silicon carbide and alumina may also be added and the pore filling material may be an alloy of Ag/Cu/Sn and Cd (silver solder), copper tin alloys, and copper iron manganese alloy. The grinding tool is produced in a preferred method by compacting a layer of an iron bronze powder and a layer of a powder mixture of diamonds and tungsten carbide and cobalt in a mould at 5 tons p.s.c. A layer of powdered silver solder is added to the compact and the composite is pressed at 20 tons p.s.c. preheated at 400-450 DEG C. in nitrogen and then sintered at 800 DEG C. in nitrogen. The sintered compact is then heated to 850 DEG C. to fuse the silver solder. Alternatively the porous sintered diamond tungsten carbide cobalt body may be infiltrated with the silver solder by immersion in a molten bath of the solder.
