Abstract

935,764. Projectile fuzes. GEB. JUNGHAMS A.G. Oct. 13, 1960 [Oct. 16, 1959], No. 35158/60 Class 9(1). A clockwork time fuze for rotatable or non- rotatable projectiles having low acceleration comprises plates 50-58, housing a spring drum 59, rotatable on a hollow shaft 60, and provided with a collar 59b. Rotatably set in the plate 50 is a fuze-setting ring 74 to which are attached a double-armed timing lever 72 (see Fig. 3) and a striker pin release lever 76, the fuze-setting ring 74 being permanently coupled for rotation to a rotatable fuze nose (not shown). The upper portion of the striker pin 15 has attached to its lower end a striker bush 18 which rests on a supporting-block 76b attached to the release lever 76. A spring 19 under tension causes the striker bush 18 to bear downwardly on the block 76b, thereby imparting a horizontal outwardly directed force to the release lever 76. As shown in Fig. 3, hook engagement 72a-76a between the levers prevents motion of either lever since a depending lug 72b is caused to press against the inner side of the collar 59b. However, when the levers are moved into positions such as shown in Fig. 4 by rotation of the fuze setting ring 74 and the clockwork mechanism is released the collar 59b rotates anti-clockwise, exposing a slot 59c, hitherto shielded by a seating surface 50a when the mechanism is in the zero position, into which the lug 72b duly slides thereby causing unhooking of the levers. The striker bush 18 is now free to move downwardly to strike the thickened portion 15a of the striker pin which forces the pointed end 15b of the striker pin into a primer (not shown). A toothed ring 59a on the spring drum 59 is connected by a gear chain 63-67 to a balance regulator mechanism 68. Safety devices (described in Specification 935,765) comprise a pin mounted on an inertia block to prevent movement of the regulator 68 and a plate to intercept accidental movement of the striker pin. A conversion of the fuze to act as a self-destroying fuze is described.
