Abstract

934,868. Container closures; opening devices for containers. R. VAN I. BURDICK, and R. VAN I. BURDICK Jun. Aug. 8, 1961 [Aug. 11, 1960], No. 28618/61. Classes 18, 66 and 125(3). A circular container comprises a bottom portion 16 and a snap-off, hermetically sealable lid 15, the bottom portion 10 including an upwardly extending circular side wall with a beaded top edge 14 and the lid having a tap circular surface 16 with an edge 17 of greater diameter than that of the beaded edge 14 and a downwardly extending circular skirt 18, of smaller diameter than that of the top surface 16, which fits around the bead 14. The skirt 18 is joined to the edge 17 by a portion 19 of a constantly decreasing diameter. A cut-out portion 22 provides fulcrum points 25 about which the lid 15 may be tilted and thence removed. A smaller cut-out portion 21 relieves the tension in the skirt 18 so that the lid may be tilted more easily. The container is made of a resilient material which allows the diameter of the skirt 18 to change when the lid is snapped on, the edge of the skirt 18 finally resting in a recess 12 provided by a ledge 11. For the purpose of stacking, a raised portion 16a together with a corresponding recess, may be provided in the lid and base, respectively, of each container.
