Abstract
934,582. Stuffing-box substitutes. CONTINENTAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 24, 1962, No. 15646/62. Class 122 (5). A crank-shaft 17 is sealed where it extends through an opening 16 in the crank-case 11 by a split rubber &c. sealing ring 20 having a tapered outer peripheral surface 20a that engages a complementarily tapered bore 16a in the crank-case to thereby exert radially inward pressure on the ring tending to close the gap 21, Fig. 3, at the split. The ring is pressed into the bore by bolts 26 acting on a plate 25 and has a flexible lip 20c urged against the crank-shaft by a garter spring 22.
