Abstract

1,218,043. Shaft seals. CARL FREUDENBERG. 1 Feb., 1968 [1 Feb., 1967], No. 5116/68. Heading F2B. In shaft sealing means comprising a sealing ring having a radially-tapered sealing lip 6 engaging the shaft 1 the lip is so arranged that the pressure of the sealed medium (in the space 8) tends to lift it from the shaft and the angle between the shaft and the lip on the side facing the sealed medium is greater than that on the opposite side. The sealing ring has a mounting portion 5 reinforced by a stiffening ring 4 and the lip 6 is urged against the shaft by a garter spring 7. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the sealing ring is carried by a casing (14) having one end turned down to engage a groove (15) in the shaft housing (2).
