Abstract
934,415. Ion-getter pumps. ULTEK CORPORATION. Sept. 5, 1960 [Sept. 25, 1959], No. 30550/60. Class 39 (1). An electric vacuum pump comprises a plurality of anode elements, a plurality of cathode elements, a vacuum pump enclosure therefor, and an inlet communicating with the interior of the enclosure in which means are provided for causing a multiple cold cathode discharge between the anode and cathode elements within the enclosure and means are provided within the enclosure for independently depositing additional reactive material therewithin. The anode elements 11, Fig. 2, are formed in units, each consisting of two groups of four with cathode plates 17 shaped as in Fig. 3, mechanically joined to the anodes by insulators 19, a number of units, for example eight, being joined together to form a cartridge. The cathode shafts 15 are joined together at each end of the cartridge by plates. A plurality of side tubes are connected to the apparatus to be evacuated. An evaporator is located in another side tube, Fig. 6 (not shown), and comprises a refractory supporting filament with a wire or strip of Ti wound around it with no spaces between turns, the wire or strip being spot-welded to the filament at each turn. The cartridge is insulated from the envelope by insulators 19 and others. A magnet with polepieces sets up an axial field. The pump is used in the degassing of oxide-coated cathodes.
